The keys are in your hand, and the boxes are piled high. Moving into a new build home in Reading or the South West is a milestone, but the first seven days are critical for identifying immediate issues.

While you should always have a professional snagging survey, there are several other “lifestyle” checks you should perform immediately…

1. Test Every Tap and Toilet

It sounds simple, but airlocks or debris in the pipes are common in new builds. Run every tap at full pressure and flush every toilet multiple times. Look for slow drainage or leaks under the sinks.

2. Check the Heating and Hot Water

Don’t wait for winter to test your boiler. Ensure all radiators heat up evenly and that your thermostat is communicating correctly with the system.

3. Inspect the External Drainage

If it rains during your first week, take a walk outside. Is water pooling against the brickwork? Are the gutters overflowing? Poor external maintenance can lead to long-term damp issues.

4. Check All Windows and Doors

Open and close every window and external door. They should operate smoothly without sticking. Check for draughts around the seals, as modern homes should be highly airtight.

5. Test Kitchen Appliances

If your home came with integrated appliances, run a cycle on the dishwasher and washing machine. Check the oven and hob to ensure they reach the correct temperatures.

6. Attic and Loft Inspection

Take a peek into the loft. Is the insulation laid evenly? Can you see any daylight where there shouldn’t be any?

7. Review Your Snagging Report

if you’ve already had a survey from Snagmaster SW, keep your report handy. Use your first week to cross-reference the items we found and see if any new issues have appeared as the house “breathes.”

The first week is about observation. By being proactive, you can ensure that minor inconveniences don’t turn into major headaches.
